About Management

Juan-Henry Cavanagh:

Mr. Cavanagh is a Director and co-founder of Cavanagh and Richards Attorneys. Mr. Cavanagh completed his Baccalaureus Legum (LLB) degree, Magister Legum (LLM) and Law School at The University of Pretoria.

After he completed his attorney’s exams, he was admitted as an attorney of the Law Society of the Northern Provinces. In the same year he completed a certificate in Advanced Labour Law with a distinction at The University of Pretoria. Mr. Cavanagh completed multiple certificates in various aspects of Labour Relations/Labour Law. These courses gave him a fundamental understanding of the following principles: disciplinary hearings, client workplace audits, representation and conducting of union negotiations, collective bargaining, management and Industrial action, incapacity enquiries, drafting of employment agreements, conciliations and arbitrations at the CCMA and Bargaining Councils, dismissals for operational requirements, Employment Equity, Skills Development Act, Extension of Security of Tenure Act, UIF and OHSA, double jeopardy, inconsistency in labour relations, company disciplinary actions, settlement agreements and polygraph testing.

Mr. Cavanagh was employed with Fourie and Fismer Incorporated Attorneys as a candidate attorney. His Principals during this time were Mr. C.P Fourie who was the President of the Law Society of the Northern Provinces and Mr. C. Fismer who is the President of the South-African Gambling Board. His services at Fourie and Fismer Incorporated Attorneys gave him knowledge and experience in civil litigation, contract law, third party law, labour law, divorce and debt collecting.

Mr. Cavanagh further gained excessive experience at SEESA (Small Employer Entities South Africa) Labour Consultants and NEASA (National Employers Association South Africa) Employers Organisation in all aspects of labour law.

In 2010 Mr. Cavanagh was invited to become a South-African Golden Key member for outstanding achievements in acquiring his masters’ degree in law of contracts. Through his acquaintances at Fourie and Fismer Incorporated Attorneys, SEESA and NEASA he is involved in the daily corporate networking between clients, associates and colleagues, and walks hand in hand with leading corporate businessmen.

Mr. Cavanagh has built a very good reputation in the labour and contract legal field and is already well- known and referred to as an expert in these legal fields by clients, associates and colleagues.

Daniel–Ross Richards:

Mr. Richards is a Director and co-founder of Cavanagh and Richards Attorneys. Mr. Richards completed his Baccalaureus Legum (LLB) degree at the University of Pretoria and is an Admitted Attorney to Appear in the Magistrate and Higher Courts of South Africa.

Mr. Richards was employed with Fourie and Fismer Incorporated Attorneys as a candidate attorney. Mr. C.P Fourie - President of the Law Society of the Northern Provinces - and Mr. C. Fismer - President of the South-African Gambling Board - were his Principals. Here he gained extensive knowledge and experience in civil litigation, contract law, third party law, labour law, divorce and debt collecting.

Mr. Richards completed a certificate in Advanced Labour Law with a distinction at The University of South Africa. Mr. Richards is currently busy with his Magister Legum (LLM) in Commercial Law and will be completing the degree in 2016. Mr. Richards was employed at KPMG as a legal advisor obtaining extensive experience in financial legal services, commercial and corporate law. Subsequently, Mr. Richards was employed as the Group Legal Advisor at Primedia Unlimited specialising in commercial, corporate, competition law, labour, marketing and advertising law. Mr. Richards was responsible for drafting of all corporate and commercial legal agreements and documents and to provide legal advice to the company and its subsidiaries in all areas of their business.

Mr. Richards also has extensive experience in commercial litigation, corporate governance, financing and business transactions within several jurisdictions in Africa. Ross has strong interpersonal, management skills, and great relations with his clients and colleagues within the legal communities.

Tobie Schmahl:

Mr. Schmahl entered the profession in 2008 upon graduating with a Bachelor of laws (LLB) at the University of Pretoria.

Mr. Schmahl is an attorney of Cavanagh and Richards Attorneys as of September 2014. In 2010, Mr. Schmahl was employed at Cilliers and Reynder Incorporated as a candidate attorney. He gained further experience in 2012, when he was employed with Jay Incorporated Attorneys. His practice is centred on Criminal Defence, Commercial Litigation, Civil Litigation, Legal Research, Legal Advice, Corporate Law, Employment Law, Labour Litigation and Divorce Law. His focus, and indeed Cavanagh and Richards Attorneys’ focus, is to provide clients with high quality legal services.

Dawie Coetzer:

Mr. Coetzer completed his Baccalaureus Legum (LLB) degree at The University of Pretoria where he has competed in, and triumphed in numerous moot court matters.

He entered the attorney’s profession by commencing his articles at Serfontein, Viljoen & Swart Attorneys where he was quick to continue his development as an avid litigator. During his articles he gained experience in general litigation matters in the High Court and Magistrate's Court, as well as handling criminal and maintenance matters. He completed his articles of clerkship and board exams whilst in the employ of SVS, before being formerly admitted as an attorney of the Law Society of the Northern Provinces. Mr. Coetzer remained in the employ of SVS as a practicing attorney, broadening his knowledge and experience in litigation matters.

Mr. Coetzer has extensive experience in labour matters, both at the CCMA as well as the labour court. He has further broadened his repertoire in opposed divorces, criminal trials as well as damages claims. He has particular interest and experience with medical malpractice matters. With regards to non-litigious matters, Mr. Coetzer has a wealth of experience in drafting of all types of contracts, trusts and formal legal documents.

Mr. Coetzer ultimately focuses on obtaining the best possible result for the clients of Cavanagh & Richards whilst building prosperous client-attorney relationships.

Francois De Necker:

Mr. De Necker’s Professional Qualifications:

Mr. De Necker is a very dynamic and hardworking individual, he always strive to be professional and have the utmost respect towards himself and others. He only expects the highest standard of conduct, repute and good faith which are consistent with the membership of this profession, thus he always strive to exhibit the qualities as set out above.

He is a dedicated sports fanatic, and has a passion for the outdoors and wildlife. He spends most of his free time either on the golf course or exploring the “off the beaten track” locations of our continent. He was admitted as an Attorney in the High Court in May 2014, after completion of his articles at Weavind & Weavind Inc, where after he joined KMG & Associates Inc. where he excelled in civil- and commercial litigation matters. He deals with a variety of litigious matters and has gained extensive knowledge in family law, debt collection proceedings and civil litigation.

Mr. De Necker has successfully litigated on behalf of various major companies in matters ranging from quite a variety of fields, he possesses an acute analytical ability and is extremely dedicated and result-driven.

Stella-Mari Geldenhuys

Ms. Geldenhuys obtained her Baccalaureus Legum (LLB) degree at The University of Pretoria in 2013. Academically Stella-Mari performed very well and that shows her willingness to work hard.

During Ms. Geldenhuys’s final year at University she worked at the University’s Law Clinic providing a voluntary service to people who could not afford legal advice. During her year at the Law Clinic she was mostly exposed to family law (divorce and maintenance).

In 2014, Ms. Geldenhuys was employed at Erasmus Scheepers Attorneys as a candidate attorney where she was exposed to most legal fields, which fields include labour law practice, family law, criminal matters and general civil litigation. Later that same year Stella-Mari ceded her articles and joined Savage Jooste & Adams Incorporated where she was furthermore exposed to personal injury litigation (third party matters against the Road Accident Fund), medical malpractice, commercial law and litigation, insurance law and general liability matters. Ms. Geldenhuys joined the legal team’s civil department during January 2016 after completing her articles.

Natascha Botha

Ms Botha has completed her Bcom LLB degree at Potchefstroom University and has been in practice for almost 10 years, being an admitted attorney and notary public. She has experience in various legal fields, consisting of civil, criminal and commercial sectors as well as practical experience in High and Magistrate court appearances, drafting of legal documents including contracts, Service Level Agreements (SLA), Insolvency matters, Fore-closure matters, Road Accident Fund claims, applications, contracts, debt collections, rental-and insurance matters, divorce matters, debt review applications, maintenance matters to only name a few. Further, she also has the Right of Appearance in the High Court in terms of section 4(2). She complied with a Practice Management Course through the Law Society in which she gained further experience in general management of businesses, risk and insurance management, finance management, marketing management, human resource/people management and strategic management. She has strong interpersonal skills, is a professional, self-motivated, team player, and able to work in stressful environments and holds herself to a high ethical code.

Odette Greyling

Ms Greyling received her Baccalaureus Legum (LLB) degree at The University of Pretoria in 2013. While at University, in her final year she worked at the University’s Law Clinic providing legal services to people who did not have the financial means to seek legal advice and assistance elsewhere. At the Law Clinic, she dealt with mostly family law matter such as divorce and maintenance. Ms Greyling is hard working and is always eager to learn, taking on any challenge big or small. Professionalism and respect are key values for Ms Greyling and this can be seen in the way she interacts with clients, colleague and opponents. In her free time, Ms Greyling loves to travel and enjoys the planning just as much as the trip itself. Relationships are important to Ms Greyling and she strives to maintain good connections with both friends and family. Ms Greyling started her legal career in 2013 as a candidate attorney at DJ Swanepoel and Associates where she was exposed to various legal fields namely; insurance law, recoveries and family law, she was working with various large insurance companies. On completing her articles, she was admitted as an attorney in 2015 where she joined Van Breda and Herbts Attorneys, there she continued with insurance law, recoveries and general civil litigation. In 2017, Ms Greyling joined Cavanagh and Richards Attorneys. In 2017, Ms Greyling enrolled to do a short course through LEAD SA in Medical Law. Law is an art, we are the artists.

Kasper Brits

Mr. Brits completed his BA degree at UP in 2010 wherein he specialized in Criminology and Psychology. He further completed his LLB degree at UP in 2014. He joined our legal team in February 2017 after completing his articles at MC van der Berg Incorporated Attorneys. Mr Brits currently specialises in Criminal law, Property law, Contracts and Civil litigation. He prioritizes client service and has a logical approach to solve legal problems.

Andrew Groenewald

Mr Groenewald completed his BCom Law in 2014 and LLB in 2016. During his studies he was exposed to various different commercial and legal fields and he elected to write his dissertation on Drone Warfare. Mr Groenewald also worked part time at the University of Pretoria as an Advancement Assistant, whereby he would draft Bursary Regulations for various donors to secure bursary support for students, this further exposed him to both contractual and regulatory matters that the university has to abide by. Mr Groenewald is a hardworking person and strives to do everything to the highest standards. After joining the Cavanagh & Richards team at the start of 2017 he is exposed to various fields of law and his passion is prominent in his work.

Hugo Pretorius

Hugo is a successful, driven and charismatic attorney, who matriculated with distinction and obtained a Bcom Law degree, with majors in Financial Management and Accounting, at the University of Pretoria in 2009. He thereafter obtained an LLB degree at the University of Pretoria in 2011 and successfully completed Law School at the University of Pretoria during 2013. Hugo did his articles of clerkship at Arthur Channon Attorneys from 2012 to 2014 and was admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa on 18 February 2014. During his employment at Arthur Channon Attorneys he completed post graduate courses in Rental and Eviction Law, as well as Air, Space and Telecommunications Law and obtained valuable experience in a wide variety of legal fields, including family law, contract law and business law, together with civil litigation experience in all these fields. His passion for business law lead him to the UNISA During 2016 where he completed two post graduate courses in Advanced Corporate Law & Securities Law (NQF 8) and Pension Funds Law (NQF 7). In an effort to expand his knowledge of the law regulating the financial services industry he completed all the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act Regulatory examinations (RE1 RE3 RE4 and RE5) during this same time. Hugo started at Cavanagh and Richards attorneys during February 2017 and has been contributing greatly to the success of the firm while mainly focussing on analysing and drafting of all forms of commercial agreements and general civil litigation matters.

Annette Cavanagh

Mrs. Cavanagh has 16 years of extensive experience in the Law Industry. Her many duties include, managing of office staff and -relationships and overseeing office administration and finances. Mrs. Cavanagh is a Paralegal Secretary and Personal Assistant to the Directors, and plays a valuable role in daily management of the firm.

Janine Smith

Ms.Smith is an extremely competent Financial Controller whose abilities to maximise cash flow and maintain cost control discipline far transcend her value to a company. With 10 years’ experience in Technical Financial Bookkeeping, Ms. Smith is motivated to achieve accurate, practical and profitable results.

In 2011 Ms. Smith was employed as Financial Controller at the Berco Group. Working closely with the Financial Director of the Berco Group has provided her with an insight into high-level Financial Management that few would have had the opportunity to be exposed to. Ms. Smith’s long-term, proven reliability and ability to work with senior management, auditors, supplier and clients alike, is second only to her emotional intelligence in keeping all stakeholders informed and appraised of risks, opportunities and any and all contingencies required.

Danielle Botes

Ms. Botes joined Cavanagh & Richards as the receptionist and secretary in February 2016. Her day-to-day role includes greeting clients and helping to answer any questions that they may have, as well as completing all day to day secretarial duties.

Ms. Botes assists in ensuring the smooth running and efficiency of our reception and administration department. She is currently in the process of obtaining her Higher Certificate of Economic and Management Science at UNISA after which she will study towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Economic and Business Management Science and furthermore intends to obtain her LLB degree in the near future.

Lelanie Potgieter

Ms. Potgieter obtained her Baccalaureus Scientiae (BSc) degree in Consumer Sciences and Business Management at the North West University (Potchefstroom). Ms Potgieter is an efficient, organised and approachable person who is always willing to help. She was exposed to various fields in the workforce thus, her knowledge is broad and can help in various aspects of business. She performs a wide array of tasks to ensure the proper functioning of the office. She intends to study further in Business Management and also intends to obtain various certificates in Bookkeeping and Accounting in the near future.
